Billy, Lilly and Pilly the Ringtail Possum Joeys
Age: Juvenile
Sex: Weight: 80gms
Billy, Lilly and Pilly were found still in their mother’s pouch, after she was found on the ground electrocuted by a power line in Yandina, Queensland.
Wildlife Rescue Sunshine Coast rushed the possums to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital after noticing joeys in the mother’s pouch.
Upon examination Dr Danny was extremely surprised to find a very full pouch with three possum joeys. After a thorough check up, it was thankfully confirmed that the joeys had escaped any injuries, however sadly, they were now orphans.
Dr Danny administered fluids and transferred the possum joeys to the nursery where they were fed and kept warm in a humid crib.
After 24 hours in the Wildlife Hospital, Billy, Lilly and Pilly were placed with a specialised wildlife carer who will care for them until they become independent and can be released back into the wild.
The mother ringtail possum typically carries one or two joeys in her pouch or on her back for the first six months, so the team at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital were surprised when they found possum joey triplets in the pouch.
